Winter Weather Information

TIPS

  • Keep cars off snow emergency routes.

  • Park vehicles in driveways or other off road locations, if possible.

  • If parked on the street, park on the even numbered side of the street.

  • Homeowners and businesses abutting sidewalks are responsible for clearing the sidewalk. Shoveling is strenuous. Do not overexert yourself.

  • NEVER run a generator inside, including in a garage. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas that will kill.

  • Check in on neighbors, especially seniors and others who may need assistance

  • Locate warming center locations on the County Winter Weather Hub.

  • Note that trash and recycling schedules may be affected.

  • Check on fire hydrants nearby to see that they are accessible.

COUNTY SNOW REMOVAL INFORMATION

The County's Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) is responsible for clearing approximately 2,000 miles of roadway. They start by clearing the primary and secondary roads and then they move into residential streets to make them "passable." Passable means just that - that a vehicle, especially an emergency vehicle, should be able to get through. Clearing all residential streets 100 percent will take longer.

Crews will be working diligently until they clear the roads. DPWT asks for 48 hours for them to get to each residential street, before contacting the county.

Sidewalk Snow and Ice Removal Inspection Program

The Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) wants residents and businesses to know that the County requires owners, tenants and managers of residential and commercial properties with paved sidewalks adjacent to their properties to clear sidewalks of snow and ice after winter weather events. Those who fail to clear snow and ice appropriately may be fined.

In severe weather conditions, residents should be aware that all scheduled bulky trash (appointment only), curbside trash, bulky, recycling, and compost and yard trim collections can be delayed or suspended due to road or weather-related conditions.

If a collection is suspended, the following guidelines will apply:
